Background
Asadullah*, a 19-year-old, arrived in Australia in mid-2024 from Afghanistan under a humanitarian visa, accompanied by his mother and older siblings. Sponsored by his eldest brother, the family settled in a private rental home, seeking safety, stability, and a better life. Like many newly arrived young people, Asadullah dreamed of learning English, finding work, and becoming an independent contributor to his new community. But as he began to settle, Asadullah quickly encountered a range of barriers that challenged his confidence and threatened to put his goals at risk.
Solution
A dedicated Settlement Practitioner worked with Asadullah to identify clear goals and provide the tools and guidance needed to achieve them. The practitioner assisted him with enrolling in English classes, accessing financial support through referrals to local aid agencies, and connecting him to employment services to begin his career journey.
In addition, Asadullah received ongoing guidance on how to navigate Australia’s systems and access the resources available to him. Importantly, the practitioner offered consistent emotional and moral support, helping to rebuild Asadullah’s self-esteem and confidence after an initially disheartening experience in a new country. This comprehensive and person-centred approach enabled Asadullah to take steady steps toward a more independent and hopeful future.
