Empowering Girls Through Sport, Health and Connection

Background

In November 2024, South East Community Links (SECL) partnered with the Noble Park English Language School (NPELS) to launch the “Inspire Her” program. This is a five-week lunchtime program designed for newly arrived adolescent girls aged 15 to 16. The initiative aimed to build resilient identities, promote healthy relationships, and prevent violence against women and girls through a unique mix of education and sport.

Key Activities

Developed in close collaboration with SECL youth workers and NPELS, the “Inspire Her” program offered a 50-minute lunchtime session over five weeks. Each session combined 15–20 minutes of small group discussions on key topics like healthy relationships and consent, women’s health, and help-seeking with 20–30 minutes of hands-on sports drills in AFL and rugby.

Facilitated in a safe, supportive environment, sessions encouraged open conversation, personal reflection, and mutual respect. With interpreter support and guidance from a school teacher, girls explored what healthy relationships look and feel like, asked questions about women’s health (especially periods), and learned how and where to seek help.

The sports component introduced participants, many for the first time, to physical activity through fun and engaging AFL and rugby drills. Tackling, passing, and teamwork helped boost confidence and promote inclusivity in traditionally male-dominated sports. SECL helped these young women take their first steps toward stronger identities, healthier relationships, and brighter futures.
