Ruby’s Journey through Adversity to Stability

Background

Ruby*, a 36-year-old mother of four, has endured a long history of family violence and financial hardship, all while managing the health challenges of her youngest child.

Originating from the Republic of Congo in 2006 into an arranged marriage with a man 14 years older than her, Ruby’s life in Australia started with hope but soon was overshadowed by violence and struggle. Since 2007, Ruby experienced repeated instances of family violence, leading to multiple separations and ending up in a terrifying incident where her husband attempted to smother their chronically ill youngest son.

Professionally, Ruby worked as a part-time disability support worker, while caring for her children, especially her youngest son with health needs. Financially burdened with $550,000 in debt and struggling with limited English literacy and no financial literacy, Ruby’s situation was critical when she was referred to South East Community Links by inTouch Multicultural Centre Against Family Violence for financial counselling.

Solution

South East Community Links and its partners addressed Ruby’s challenges through a comprehensive approach. Our financial counsellor negotiated with utility providers to refund payments and waive debts, providing Ruby financial relief. They secured consistent child support payments and helped Ruby to navigate Centrelink services. Our team also facilitated access to NDIS services for her son.

Our team worked collaboratively with legal services due to the drawn out legal battles regarding property settlement. To secure home ownership, the financial counsellor helped achieve a Binding Financial Agreement and complete the property settlement, allowing Ruby to refinance her mortgage. Ruby maintained her children’s education at a supportive private school.

During her case, Ruby had a car accident and her car was written off. Financial counselling provided support to navigate the insurance claims process.

Counselling for Ruby and her children was organised with partner agencies. These efforts transformed Ruby’s situation from adversity to stability and hope.
